    Maintenance sheet: Clementinier

Citrus Clementina is a citrus fruit from the rutaceae family, which results from a deliberate cross between the mandarin tree and the orange tree. Smaller than the tangerine, and with a deliciously sweet taste, its fruits are in principle seedless.

At Pousse you will find it under the highly sought-after name of Clémentine .

The Clémentinier is therefore a hybrid, born in Algeria at the beginning of the 20th century, which is enjoying ever-increasing success.

    ☀️ Exhibition:

Renowned for its multiple fruiting bodies, it is best to grow the clementine tree outdoors and protect it from frost in winter, or bring it indoors. You can put it indoors in the fall to acclimatize it. The rest of the year he likes to be bathed in light outside.

    💧 Watering :

Like any self-respecting citrus fruit, the clementine tree needs a substantial supply of water to grow as it pleases. If sun and heat guarantee a homogeneous growth, regular watering and the addition of fertilizer are necessary for its growth. You can consider an automatic watering system, which will ensure its water supply by drip.

    Cultivation errors :

Never let the water stagnate in the cups, in pots spaced waterings of 15 days are enough. If in the summer you can install it outdoors, do not forget that the clementine tree generally grows in hot climates. Since it is grown in a container, you can keep it from the winter cold in a greenhouse or veranda.

    🤢 Diseases and pests:

Its main diseases come from cultivation errors and attacks by mealybugs and aphids.

Sooty mold is a cryptogamic disease, which in itself is not very serious! It is distinguished by a black deposit that looks like soot on the leaves, directly related to the presence of parasites that deposit their sweet and sticky honeydew.

Aphids are easily spotted on its foliage, they can be observed under their undersides with the naked eye to eliminate them. Red spider mites are also their enemies but, as they do not tolerate humidity, the invasion can be stemmed.

Consequences: The clementine weakens and ends up losing its leaves, after they have rolled up on themselves.

Solution : Avoid letting them proliferate, otherwise the tree will lose its substance and fruiting will be interrupted.

Scale insects are insects that like to suck sap from plants. If your clementine tree has whitish felting on its foliage, it is very likely that it is already overgrown, so it needs to be treated.

Consequences: Your shrub weakens and ends up losing its leaves, after they have rolled up on themselves.

Solution : Prevent these sucking and biting insects from settling permanently by spraying black soap-based water.

🌱 How to repot a Clementine:

Planting in pots or in the ground: In order not to compromise fruiting, which follows a process of its own, repotting must be practiced from January to June. It is above all an ease that we bring to the plant, to optimize its fertilization!

The clementine must have a practical side to be offered a good base, which does not prevent the use of pots with nice aesthetics. At Paris Pousse you will find it dressed in a terracotta of the most beautiful effect.

    1. When your citrus tree gets too big, every 3 years you will have to unpot it to reduce the root ball by a third. After cutting into the roots, place it in its pot, renewing the soil with special potting.

    2. Don't forget the clay pebbles to facilitate the drainage of the clementine tree, and use citrus compost. In order to flourish at best, this demanding tree needs these essential steps to condition its good development.

    3. To complete the picture, know that repotting goes hand in hand with good fertilization, and that a more generous size of its container offers space for the roots. In which case this should be done in autumn, before wintering.

For cuttings, nothing could be simpler: Take the ends of twigs in August, about 15 cm in size, then dip the cutting in specially designed hormone powder. Place them individually in buckets, which you will have taken care to fill with equal parts of sand and blond peat. Tamp the mixture and wet with a spray bottle.
