    Care sheet: Bamboo

The expression "It's a beautiful plant" is in no way overused when talking about bamboo. Particularly appreciated for its evergreen foliage, it is often found in hedges.

This very beautiful shrub bears the delicate name of Marie chez Pousse.

His appearance earned him a reputation for distinction, as he knows how to be trendy and graceful at the same time. Bamboo is native to Asia, its roots are a story in themselves: Pandas love it, here is what its popularity is based on. In our regions, it is its opacity that gives it a good and solid reputation.

    ☀️ Exhibition:

Rather sunny but not hot, so a soft and comfortable situation.

    💧 Watering:

Bamboo is very fond of water, so it is better to avoid letting it languish too long between two waterings. A mulch can be very useful at the beginning, just to maintain the moisture content of the soil at its maximum. It is also the golden rule of Bamboo, to be able to be watered as soon as the surface of the soil has dried up.

    Cultivation errors:

Bamboo can quickly become invasive, you must absolutely stop its progression outdoors. Its roots will quickly spread haphazardly! To prevent the invasion of your garden, it is imperative to lay a canvas from the bottom of the cavity to the surface. This anti-rhizome barrier must be installed at a depth of 70cm.

    🤢 Diseases and pests:

Fairly resistant to common diseases, these are parasites and insects that bamboo must be protected from. Aphids are relatively harmless, but their invasion can quickly become a plague. Scale insects, against which your plant must be protected, are more difficult and dangerous.

Consequences: The leaves are covered with a whitish mass, proof that your bamboo is infested with scale insects.

Solution: Clean them with a cloth soaked in a mixture of water and alcohol. At worst, remove the infested branches.

Bamboo can also be a victim of spider mites, they suck the sap from the leaves which turn yellow and fall one by one.

The treatment is very simple: Spray them with water because, preferring dry air to develop, they don't like it at all. As for aphids, you will spot their presence in the deposit of honeydew which makes the bamboo leaves sticky. A simple spray of black soap (a tablespoon for 1 liter of water) every one or two weeks and it will no longer appear.

🌱 How to repot a Bamboo:

Planting in a pot: We have seen that bamboo can quickly become invasive, so planting it in a container or planter is the ideal solution. Well installed on a balcony or terrace, it will protect you from prying eyes.

    1. Bamboo has the unfortunate tendency to grow very quickly, to allow it to take its ease, plan a pot with a large diameter. As you will have to water your plant often, make sure that it is well pierced so that in case of excess water can flow.

    1. As the soil runs out much more quickly in a pot than outdoors, bring it potting soil for green plants as soon as you plant or take cuttings. Lawn fertilizer in the spring will do, or special bamboo, so trimmed your shrub will tolerate being grown in a container or other.

    1. Expect that your shrub will grow quickly because it can quickly reach a significant height. The fargesia bamboo in particular measures an adult 3 meters maximum, for 1 to 1.50m in diameter. However, it supports very well being pruned, a real pleasure for the eyes for your hedges in particular.

    👍🏼 Good to know

For outdoor planting, do not hesitate to mulch the base of your bamboo during the summer, this will allow it to retain moisture longer. Preferably choose a good special planting soil than garden soil, and provide a semi-shaded place rather than full sun.

Note: Once pruned, the canes no longer grow back, only the ramifications will be able to do so, but without ever reaching that of the mother stem. New shoots will be made at the base, which you can however let grow at your convenience.
