Whatever its shape or appearance, the Sansevieria is one of those plants that has character. More commonly known as " mother-in-law's language ", it is a particularity that each of her colleagues concedes to her.

Philippe and Simone , the star Sansevierias from Paris Pousse , won't tell you otherwise!

    ☀️ Exhibition:

Provide him with a space bathed in light but indirect, with a temperature of around 20°C.

    💧 Watering:

From spring to summer, moderate but regular watering, once a week is enough. In absolute terms, it should be done when the soil becomes dry on the surface, with non-calcareous water and at room temperature to avoid any unnecessary stress. Space out the waterings during the fall and winter.

     Cultivation errors :

The Sansevieria fears excess humidity more than drought if it is temporary, so avoid watering it more than necessary. When your plant regains its growth, you can resume a more intensive rhythm in the spring. Likewise, protect it from the blazing rays of the sun, it would lose its vigor and its leaves could dry out.

    🤢 Diseases and pests

Excessive humidity is its worst enemy, its predators are mealybugs .

The disease to be feared is therefore rotting of the roots and leaves, which can harm it very seriously.

As for mealybugs , these insects are easily spotted by the cottony-looking mealy clumps that they deposit on the leaves.

Consequences: These parasites suck the substance of the plant, until they block the development of the affected leaves.

Solution: Spray a black soap-based solution, if necessary pass a sponge soaked in a more concentrated solution under and above the leaves. But you can also dab them, using a cotton swab soaked in rubbing alcohol.

🌱 How to repot a Sansevieria?

It is in the spring that you must proceed with the repotting, an essential operation which needs to be carried out every two or three years. Each time choose a pot with a slightly larger diameter, to ensure that it gets comfortable.

    1. Its size can easily reach more than a meter! Given the space it quickly occupies, it is a plant that should be left alone. Its soil should consist of a mixture of compost, peat and loam, or even sand.

    2. Prefer spring to give it plenty of sunshine and, as with all your indoor companions, make sure it has good drainage. Simple pebbles at its base will suffice, but they are nevertheless essential.

    3. Cuttings are done by dividing a leaf into several 5 cm pieces, which you will plant in the spring, after segmenting the clump. Separating suckers is an almost limitless method of propagation.

    👍🏼 Good to know:

Sansevieria is grown primarily for its long, fleshy, linear leaves. Standing vertically, they offer an interesting graphic aspect, both for a classic interior and in a contemporary home. Its medicinal properties can be summed up in a few words: anti-pollution and benefits for the respiratory tract, eyes and skin.

Note: This succulent mother-in-law's tongue can, according to one of its 70 varieties, flower indoors but only under good conditions. It is then at the birth of several small white panicles that she does you the honor of attending.
