    Care Sheet: Fern

The Boston fern is a perennial that is perfectly suited to our modern interiors. Let's add that it has exceptional depolluting qualities and you will give it all the attention it deserves.

At Pousse we named it Jade, because of its trendiest designer green color. With a feathery decorative appearance, its delicately cut wavy fronds fall gracefully. As they come from the West Indies, Africa, Polynesia or America, its origins give it a tropical appearance of the most beautiful effect.

    ☀️ Exhibition:

It is better to reserve a lighted place for it but without direct radiation, where the temperature is between 15 and 20°C.

    💧 Watering:

The Boston fern needs a high level of humidity, but you can wait for its soil to dry on the surface between two waterings. To keep it moist, do not hesitate to mist its foliage regularly.

    Cultivation errors:

Ferns are not hardy and do not tolerate atmospheres below 10°C, below which they interrupt their vegetation. In absolute terms, reserve a bright space for it, but not too much, at the risk of seeing its leaves burn in the sun.

    🐛 Diseases and pests:

If your fern lacks water or you water it too much the fronds will wilt. Its enemies are parasites and mites such as mealybugs , weevils and aphids . You will easily spot the presence of thrips, which cause the leaves to discolor with small brown spots.

Consequences: Mealybugs in particular like the tender fronds of fern leaves, they will suck their sap until they are stuffed with it. Their mite buddies will stunt the plant, crushing and devouring its aerial parts. Nothing very pleasing but without real gravity, provided that you act without delay.

Solution: Start by removing the faded fronds, then spray a mixture of 1% methylated spirit, black soap and a little vegetable oil added to non-calcareous water. Thorough cleaning of the leaves, removing the shells with a cotton ball soaked in 90° alcohol, is recommended for indoor plants.

This ecological remedy will save you, like any treatment based on essential oils, from having to use an insecticide.

    🌱 Repot a fern:

Indoor planting: It is through a thin, hairy stolon that the Boston fern develops. It takes root while it runs on the surface of the substrate, which we will obviously choose suitable for repotting in the spring.

    1. Water your fern generously before unpotting it, then place it in the center of its new habitat. Opt for a rather large pot , ensure drainage with a shard then fill it up to 2/3 with a special potting soil for green plants.

    2. After taking care to raise the fronds to fill the pot, gently tamp the soil and water copiously. Add fertilizer every week in season, winter once a month is enough because it is in rest.

    3. For propagation, you just need to cut a portion of stolon, bearing a few roots and young fronds. Replant it and voila. As for the sowing of spores and the division of the plant, carry them out as soon as spring returns.

    👍🏼 Good to know:

To ensure that your fern maintains a harmonious head carriage, rotate its pot regularly until it returns to its starting point. By proceeding little by little over its entire circumference, you will make a model of balance. Florists like to associate it with other plants, by using its fronds in their compositions they ensure a beautiful effect.
