The Calathea Makoyana is called Peacock plant because of its vibrant shades. But it is also for its magnificent oblong leaves, reminiscent of the feathers of the majestic bird, which stand on slender petioles.

This perennial houseplant has been given the charming name of Marion at Paris Pousse

From its tropical American origins, it has retained particular assets, in particular shades that are enhanced with the care provided to it. To make it color from pink to purple, its sunshine is not to be taken lightly.

    IN ONE LOOK

☀️ Exposure: Avoid too intense lighting, which would harm its foliage. Prefer a softer or even subdued light.

💧 Watering : During its growth period, the root ball must be kept very humid, so do not hesitate to water it abundantly. Space out during a rest period, let the substrate dry and give your preference to lukewarm rainwater.

❌ Cultivation errors: Cultivated as an indoor plant, the Peacock plant tolerates an optimal atmosphere varying from 15 to 25°C. However, regularly bathe its foliage to keep it looking good, otherwise you run the risk of seeing its leaves scorch.

    🐛 DISEASES AND PESTS:

Renowned for enjoying moderate temperatures, without rare frosts being detrimental to it, the Peacock plant can suffer from bacterial diseases . As for pests, it fears the attacks of red spiders as much as mealybugs .

Consequences : A mite infestation is noticeable when the first cobwebs appear. These insects feed on its substance. The solution lies in introducing predatory mites or misting your plant.

Mealybugs for their part leave trailing honeydew and waxy threads on the stems and leaves, their passage is clearly visible. The solution is to spray an insecticide or to introduce auxiliary larvae such as those of the cockchafer.

Regarding the disease, it is a fire blight that destroys everything in its path. Leaves become stunted or die after ulcers appear. Preserve the hygiene of your Calathea Makoyana and mercilessly remove any affected part.

🌱 PLANTING OR REPOTTING A PEACOCK PLANT:

The surrounding atmosphere of the plant must be humid, so framing it with other green plants contributes to its well-being. You can thus integrate it with many of its sisters or simply cultivate it in your bathroom.

    STEP 1

Use a somewhat acidic, draining and humus-rich substrate. You can therefore opt for a mixture of ½ potting soil and ¼ peat, aerating it with ¼ sand or perlite. Clay pebbles placed at the bottom of the pot will improve drainage.

    STEP 2

During its growth period, do not hesitate to reinforce it by adding fertilizer once every two weeks. Your Peacock plant will only do better afterwards, its size can become substantial, so go ahead generously.

    STEP 3

Repotting should be done every year, but only for healthy subjects. Carry out the operation at the end of spring or at the very beginning of winter, this will optimize its anchorage and give it a boost.

    👍🏼 TO KNOW:

The multiplication as for it is done at the end of spring, by division of the clumps. Just make sure that each rhizome has roots for a good recovery. If necessary, soak them in rooting hormone , preferably organic.

Once planted in small pots, with a classic but moist mixture, keep them enclosed in plastic bags. Keep them in the dark and put them in the open air as soon as new roots form.
